Cecilia Gunkel is a visual artist working in figurative and text-based painting. Her practice explores embodiment, rest, and the cultural pressures surrounding productivity and self-worth. Through restrained compositions, domestic spaces, and the horizontal female body, her work investigates how contemporary life shapes our relationship to labour, care, and belonging.
Her paintings create quiet, atmospheric spaces that hold both softness and tension, inviting reflection on what it means to exist beyond constant productivity.
Cecilia Gunkel is a German-born visual artist based in the west of Ireland. She works primarily in painting and mixed media, developing a contemporary practice centred on rest, embodiment, and the female experience. Her current body of work, Resting Without Guilt, examines the politics of rest within modern productivity culture. With a background in Communication Science and visual making, her practice combines conceptual clarity with material sensitivity.
She has previously exhibited independently in Germany and continues to develop her studio practice in Ireland.
